Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana’ is a small deposit scheme for girl child, launched as a part of the ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ campaign, which would fetch an attractive interest rate and provide income tax rebate.
The minimum deposit is ₹250 and the maximum is ₹1,50,000 per financial year. Deposits can be made for up to 15 years from the account’s opening date.
The interest rate is declared quarterly by the Government of India. Interest is compounded annually and credited at the end of the financial year.
After the account holder turns 18, they can withdraw up to 50% of the balance for higher education or marriage.
The account can be closed prematurely in the event of the account holder’s death or in certain compassionate circumstances, such as life-threatening medical support.
The account can be transferred from one bank or post office to another anywhere in India.
The interest earned in the account is free from income tax under Section 10 of the IT Act. Deposits also qualify for a deduction under Section 80-C of the IT Act
